Muttley — Loud, Hot, and Absolutely Worth It

Muttley was the first classic car I truly drove — not carefully introduced, not tip-toed around, but used properly, on real roads, during a rally, and far from home.

He’s part of Colin’s collection, and very much his pride and joy. Loud, unapologetic, and full of presence, Muttley doesn’t try to be civilised. He announces himself everywhere he goes and expects you to pay attention in return.

My first real experience with Muttley came during a rally in Spain. Under the heat, he overheated badly — again and again — demanding stops, checks, patience, and trust. There were moments where the sensible option would have been to worry, to doubt the car, or to wish for something easier.

But despite the heat, the noise, and the tension that comes with pushing an old machine far from comfort, Muttley did what mattered most. He kept going. He got us there. And when the time came, he brought us back home again.

Driving Muttley was a lesson in trust — trusting the car, trusting the engineering, and trusting that not every great driving experience is smooth or effortless. Some of them are loud, hot, imperfect… and unforgettable.

I haven’t driven Muttley recently, but that hasn’t changed what he is. He remains maintained, alive, and ready — a car that doesn’t need excuses to be used, only the right moment.
